Plant of the month January

Erica carnea (Winter Heath)

A rare splash of colour in the middle of the grey Rhenish winter: The small Winter Heath (Erica carnea) starts to flower in January and delights until spring with its colours ranging from white to violet. Therefore, Erica carnea is quite popular as an ornamental plant in private and urban gardens.

It can be used particularly well as an easy-care ground cover in sunny to semi-shady areas and is available in many different cultivars. Unlike most other heather species, Erica carnea thrives best in calcareous soils.
